Emirates steps into the wild to sponsor ‘The Last Wilderness of the UAE’

The three part documentary to premiere fall 2016

DUBAI, U.A.E., April 2015– Emirates, a global connector of people, places and passions, has signed up to sponsor ‘The Last Wilderness of the UAE’, a documentary series that will feature the United Arab Emirates’ remarkably rich biodiversity. It will also provide insight into the natural adaptations that have enabled many species to survive in the Arabian Peninsula’s harsh and ever-changing habitats as well as showcase some of the most important conservation accomplishments over recent years.

The three part documentary will be divided to focus on the ecosystems of the mountains and wadis, the deserts, and the seas of the UAE.

Patrick Brannelly, Divisional Vice President Customer Experience for In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity, commented on Emirates’ support of the documentary: “As a global airline with our base in Dubai, Emirates is committed to providing support for innovative projects that highlight the unknown incredible stories within the vibrant UAE ecosystem. Through supporting the creation of this documentary and then letting our passengers view it onboard our flights, we hope to engage millions of our customers around the world and raise awareness about the abundant natural beauty found in the UAE’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems."

Jonathan Ali Khan, the Producer and Director of ‘The Last Wilderness of the UAE’ said: “As a natural history filmmaker, I have dived, filmed and explored all of the seas, deserts and mountains across the Arabian Peninsula over the last 27 years. After seeing so many changes to our natural world and the wildlife in this region, I wanted to turn our focus more specifically towards our own home here in the United Arab Emirates. Thanks to the support of Emirates, these films will feature the wildlife and ecology that is found in our mountains and wadis, the plains and deserts, as well as coastal wetlands and offshore islands, exploring the reefs and all the other underwater habitats, too.”

Ali Khan added: “We will document and showcase the true and often surprising biodiversity of a region that most people just think of as being dry without much wildlife at all. We intend to show just how far from the truth that really is. Each film will feature the natural history of many wildlife species, right up through the food chain on land and under the seas; as well as reveal both delicate and resilient cycles of life that keep the natural order of this amazing land in balance, albeit – a delicate balance. Having the series air on board ice is really exciting as it has the potential to reach millions of passengers beyond the TV reach, providing a long term home for the content for years to come.”

‘The Last Wilderness of the UAE’ will feature three 60 minute long films that capture the natural behavior of a wide selection of terrestrial and marine wildlife including invertebrates, mammals, fish, reptiles and birds – studying their behavior and survival mechanisms in the unforgiving surroundings of the UAE. It will also tell the formidable, powerful stories of these species, underscored by new knowledge of their fragile existence and their life-or -death quest for survival in a harsh environment.

One such example is the Arabian Oryx, which has demonstrated some of the most remarkable natural adaptations to its arid surroundings. The Arabian Oryx (locally known as Al Maha in Arabic) is one of only four Oryx species, and the only antelope outside Africa.

The Arabian Oryx can go without ever drinking water, taking the moisture it needs from the plants it consumes as it only needs water equivalent to 2-4% of its body weight. Another adaptation is its white coat that helps protect it from the glare of the sun. Perhaps the most amazing acclimatization of them all is its ability to lower its blood temperature by seven degrees during the hottest periods of the day. This amazing desert survivor was brought back from extinction in the wild due to one of the most successfully recorded rescue attempts, which was facilitated in the UAE.

Filming around the desert ecosystem and its wildlife will soon be commencing at the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve supported by Al Maha Desert Resort, owned by Emirates.

Additionally, the stories of the wildlife featured in the films will be linked to the local knowledge of Bedouin and coastal inhabitants of the UAE, merging local artisanal and instinctive knowledge with academic research methods and conservation practices.

The series is set to premiere on the Discovery Channel in the fall of 2016 initially in English with Arabic subtitles, airing in the Middle East and North Africa. An Arabic edition is also being produced to be aired after that and the documentary series will eventually be aired in other territories, such as Central and Eastern Europe and Africa. It will also simultaneously air on ice, Emirates award winning in-flight entertainment system.

In addition to the three part 60 minute documentaries, content will also be produced for twelve 5 minute mini-documentary videos for podcasts and across a spectrum of social media channels, among other online platforms. DVD sets will be produced and distributed regionally to retail outlets and DVDs will also be distributed free-of-cost to schools and universities to educate them about the UAE’s diverse ecosystem.

At the event which took place in NCPC Corporate Head Office in Abuja, the Chairman of NCPC, His Grace, Most Rev. Nicholas .D. He explained that the casting of lot is biblical as he made reference to Acts chapter 1 verse 12-26.
The Chairman who is also the Primate of the Church of all Nigeria, Anglican Communion, stated that Christian Pilgrimage Lottery Scheme is a revelation from God and since it has the backing of the Almighty it would be blessed and successful.
He stressed that with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding the two coordinating Agencies of government would be blessed and the Christians who would participate in the Lottery Scheme would be touched by God when they visit the Holy Land on Pilgrimage.
In his remarks, the Director General of the National Lottery Regulatory Commission, Mr. Adolphus Joe Ekpe stated that the use of lottery in taking decision is both in the old and new testament of the Holy Bible.
He described lottery as one of the tools for national development.
Mr. Ekpe further stressed that the importance of the signing of MOU with NCPC on Christian pilgrimage Lottery Scheme would form the basis for the partnership between the two commissions.
He explained that the position of the regulator is to provide the enabling platform for the operator to perform.
Mr. Ekpe further stressed that the two Commissions must ensure that the operator is transparent and has the financial muscle to run the scheme, because according to him, “success of every lottery scheme is dependent on the operator”.

Olumirin waterfalls: Nature’s gift to Erin-Ijesha

A visit to the State of the Living Spring, Osun state , is not complete for a tourist without a visit to Erin-Ijesa in Oriade local government. You might be wondering why a tourist will need to take such trip from the state capital, Osogbo, which is home to the popular Osun Osogbo festival and culture. The answer is not far fetched as Erin Ijesha is host to the popular Olumirin Waterfalls.

Olumirin water fall, according to Engr. Daniyan, is the most visited tourist site in Nigeria today. As at November of 2014, from January to November the tourist site grossed 50,000 visitors. No other tourist site has had that level of patronage .

The waterfall is 2km off Erin Ijesha town. According to one of the custodians of the waterfall, it was discovered by a woman called Akinla, founder of Erin-Ijesha town and a granddaughter of Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba race, in the year 1140 AD during the migration of Ife people to Erin- Ijesa. Legend has it that when it was first discovered, the waterfall had the appearance of a mysterious figure.

Travelling in company of three other tourists I came across at the Ilesha park in Osogbo,I was spellbound seeing the seven layers of rocks and seven waterfalls as the water flows majestically among the rocks and splashes down with great force on the vegetation around like a mysterious figure indeed. Erin-ijesa as part of south western Nigeria falls within the tropical climatic belt with alternating hot dry and warm humid seasons. Atmospheric temperatures only slightly from 30-34oC ranges while the annual rainfall averages 1500cm.

The breeze cool and refreshing

The breeze at the waterfalls is cool and refreshing. The whole scenery is fascinating and idyllic. I tried comparing the scenery with that of Agbokim waterfalls in Cross River state. What I saw at the Olumirin water falls is like the collection of seven cascades which pour over a cliff creating an impressive seven-part waterfall as in Agbokim Waterfalls.

As we savour the surroundings of the waterfalls, the tourist guard on duty, Oluwole explains that when the falls was first discovered that no one dared move near it for fear of being swallowed up. “It was believed to be a living spirit through whose several mouths water gushed out; a very tall and huge spirit whose height reached to the high heavens. The inhabitants therefore named the fall Olumirin.

“They thought this was another god whose power over the whole area was only similar to Akinla, the founder of Erin Ijesha town.”

Climbing the waterfall

According to a tourist who has visited the waterfalls, “it doesn’t look like anything out of this world until you begin climbing the seven levels of the ascending plains of the waterfalls. “So, we begin the climbing, the view at all the levels is wonderful and the freshness of the water is energizing. However, the last and seventh level is definitely the most intriguing, well that’s if you ever dared the torturous climb.”

The tour guard seeing the panting of some of us said only few tourists can climb beyond the second layer. He said: “Climbing up to the third level can best be equated to traipsing the snowy steeply Mount Everest. “The area can also serve for mountaineering exercise. Obviously, being at these different levels and just basking in the invigorating freshness of the falls is an unforgettable experience.”

But guess what? The place to be is definitely the seventh level. Why? Not only does it lie at the peak of the falls, it also hosts a settlement where many of its inhabitants have lived for several years!” Still another enraptured tourist could only wax poetic when he was confronted with the sheer splendour of nature at Olumirin. “I could not resist the seduction of this beauty, for Olumirin Water Falls is craft of supreme architecture.

Overcoming his inertia, one of the trio plunged deep into the fresh flowing fountain, burying his fears and anxieties in the clear water. This was the first fall. Each fall distinctly marks the mystical propensity of the fountain. Its ability to sieve out the adventurous from the lilly-livered enjoys universal acclaim. “Ascending the first steps that point to the first fall is usually for all. Though its dancing bridge and the mould covered greenish stones leave a bare feet squirming in pain, yet the first fall is all embracing. Like a mother, she opens her bosom for all visitors to the fall to soup from her clear spring.

It’s after this that the ascent to the second fall begins. We made it to the second fall. “We had erroneously believed that we had seen the best of Olumirin Water Fall. But we saw nothing in the first fall. The second fall was out of this world, we came to appreciate why we are human, not an animal.

A tourist, Wale Folarin, narrating his experience at the falls said “My eyes beheld beauty. I saw, touched and tasted beauty. I flew off on the wings of contemplation. As the water like a snake lazily sliced through the heights, it picked up velocity that slapped the flesh, pumping out like an imprisoned rebel through the thickness of the woods. The third fall was something else…”

Yet another dazed visitor said, “The breeze at the waterfall is cool and refreshing, the water flows among rocks and
