Why we open S/African tourism office in Lagos — Van Schalkwyk

By JIMOH BABATUNDE
Aside from being one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world, tourism can actually help to create better understanding between people. This was the submission of the South African Tourism Minister, Mr. Marthinus Van Schalkwyk, at the opening of the country’s Tourism Marketing office in Lagos recently.
“Tourism is the fastest growing economic sector in South Africa, one of the fastest growing sectors in the world, but apart from its obvious economic benefit of job creation we must see tourism as one of the antidotes for mistrust, for conflicts and for war. Tourism will actually help to create better understanding between people.”
Mr. Marthinus Van Schalkwyk, accompanied by his Nigerian counterpart, Chief Edem Duke, said South Africa sees the special and longstanding relationship between his country and Nigeria as pivotal towards maintaining an Africa that is economically vibrant, “an Africa that grows through partnerships between nations.”
He added “Key to creating economic vibrancy and resilience is working together to develop industries that have the potentials to contribute meaningfully to our GDPs and job creation on the continent. Tourism is certainly one such industry.”
Speaking on reasons for opening the South African Tourism marketing office on the continent of Africa, Nigeria being the first to be opened, Marthinus Van Schalkwyk disclosed that it is a sign of their confidence in Africa tourism and especially in West Africa and the realization that there are huge potentials for tourism on the African continent.
The South African Tourism Minister disclosed that his country has experienced positive growth figures out of West Africa with a total of 73.282 Nigerian tourists visiting his country last year marking a 13.8 percent increase from 2011.
“At the end of June 2013, Nigerian tourists’ arrival had continued to grow on a strong trajectory with 15.9 percent during the first six months of 2013.”
He added that the tourists arrival into his country from Ghana for the same period of time show that the West Africa region are valuable to their markets.
Mr. Marthinus Van Schalkwyk said for tourism to play a major role in African economies issues of air transportation, visa and marketing need to be addressed by African leaders.
“On the issue of air transport, it is a challenge to all of us, we must convince our government to make it easy for our people to connect and to reach destinations, but we must also address our governments that we need to implement the Yamasouko decision to open up our skies in the Africa continent.“
He added, “Secondly, is the issue of visa. We will all want visa free world, but the reality is that for a long time to come there will still be visa process in place, but we must take a look at how we streamline the processes that make it possible for people to afford all the long queues.
While looking at the way of e-visa to address the visa issue, the South African Tourism Minister urged African countries to do a lot of tourism marketing within the continent, “so that the people  can know what we have in our own continent and what people can experience. Like Edem Duke said, tourism cannot be a one way thing; it must be a two way thing to be successful.”

Emirates to Launch Linked Service to Abuja and Kano in Nigeria

Emirates, a global connector of people and places, is set to expand its presence in Africa’s most populous country Nigeria, with the start of a daily linked service to Abuja and Kano from 1 August 2014. The announcement follows Emirates’ recent milestone of ten years of successful operations to Lagos, to which the airline flies twice daily.
Abuja, located in the centre of the country, is a planned city built largely during the 1980s which replaced Lagos as Nigeria’s capital in 1991. It is the seat of the Federal Government and home to most of Nigeria’s institutions and parastatals, including the Central Bank of Nigeria and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. Abuja is also the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States and the regional headquarters of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
Kano, the capital of Kano State in northern Nigeria, is the second most populous city in Nigeria after Lagos, and has a history that goes back hundreds of years. The area is known for the production and export of groundnuts, which was a major source of Nigeria’s export earnings before the oil boom in the 1970s.
Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of the airline, introduced a scheduled freighter service to Kano in October 2013, and with Abuja joining the network, Emirates will now fly to 26 destinations in Africa and 142 worldwide in 80 countries.
Emirates launched services to Nigeria on 2 January 2004 with four flights per week from Dubai to Lagos linked with Accra in Ghana, using an A330-200 aircraft. Just over a year later Emirates increased its services from four to six flights a week, and following further demand, it became a daily operation in October 2005. On 1 January 2006, Lagos was delinked from Accra and became a direct service to Dubai. On 1 February 2009, a second daily service was introduced, and today each flight is served with a Boeing 777-300 ER.
“Nigeria is experiencing strong demographic and economic growth. The country is strategic to Emirates’ global expansion, as Africa is. With our decision to start a daily linked service to Abuja and Kano we will now offer from three major cities in the country a very convenient and comfortable access to Dubai, and to Emirates network via Dubai, particularly the Middle East and Asia Pacific, where Emirates is flying to more than 30 destinations, including the Airbus 380 to 12 cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Sydney. The new service will also help create new opportunities for business, industry and tourism,” said Thierry Antinori, Emirates Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer.
The route will be serviced by an Airbus 340-500 offering a total of 258 seats in a three class configuration – 12 in First Class, 42 in Business Class and 204 in Economy Class. Customers will experience Emirates award-winning service by its multi-national cabin crew, gourmet cuisine and its ice entertainment system, offering hundreds of channels of on-demand audio and visual entertainment. Emirates’ customers also receive a generous baggage allowance of 50kg for First Class, 40 for Business Class and 30 for Economy Class
Emirates SkyCargo will offer over 200 tons of cargo capacity per week, with main imports expected into Abuja and Kano being personal effects, clothing material and electronics, while exports include leather, kola nuts, spices and fresh meat.
Further testament to the growing importance of Nigeria as a key Emirates market, Emirates Holidays, the tour-operating arm of Emirates, last December opened a dedicated retail office and call centre in Lagos in partnership with Tour Brokers International (TBI) Ltd, who was appointed Preferred Sales Agency (PSA) for Nigeria.
Abuja will be the first stop on the linked service on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and Kano will be the first stop on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Emirates flight EK 785 will depart Dubai at 1030hrs and arrive in Abuja at 1450hrs. It will depart Abuja at 1640hrs and arrive in Kano at 1750hrs. The return flight will depart Kano at 2025hrs and arrive in Dubai at 0615hrs the next morning. Flight EK 786 will depart Dubai at 1030hrs and arrive in Kano at 1430hrs. It will depart Kano at 1625hrs and arrive in Abuja at 1735hrs. It will depart for Dubai at 2005hrs arriving at 0615hrs the next morning.

Langham Hotel: ’140 years old, yet modern’

By JIMOH BABATUNDE
THE Langham Hotel, London has remained focus to the ideal behind its construction as an elegant, glamorous and grand hotel in 1865. It has also not lost the legendary afternoon tea served at the dazzling Palm Court that has remained its signature for over 140 years.
Sitting in midst of  some visiting journalists  at the  dazzling Palm Court , the centre piece of the property  recently, Brian Gore, Director of Communication of the hotel, was at his best as he tells  why the hotel has remained the number one in terms of services and history. Here is an excerpt.
ON using the history of the hotel to market the product:
The hotel has a long history. When it was built in 1865, at that time it was really the first   grand hotel to be built, it was a purpose built hotel. At a time it was the largest building in London, there were other hotels at the time but were smaller, there were guest houses.
So when it was built, it was the first hotel to have lift, it was the first hotel to have bath rooms with the bedrooms; it was the first hotel to have telephones in all the rooms. It was always in the first in the use of other technology.
We use the history to tell the story of the hotel and the afternoon tea as a prime example, because when we opened in 1865, we served afternoon tea on the menu and it cost seven pence at the time, but the afternoon tea was invented here at the hotel.
It was actually started by Duchess of Bedford in 1840s, she was a lady of dignity, she was a member of the high society, she used to get tired in the afternoon and will ask her staff to bring her some of the left over from lunch to eat in her room where she is in the afternoon, and then she will invite her friends to come and join her where they will have tea and pastries and so on. That was where it started.
So, when we opened in 1865 there was no else like this in London, there was no other dinning experience like this in London, we had one of the biggest dinning rooms in London and we were serving afternoon tea. We want to say that the real traditional afternoon tea you have today in London actually began here, this palm court in this building.
When we tie history to the hotel, the hotel was built in the Victoria period in London, beautiful Victoria façade in the front of the hotel, which is not normally the case with hotels in London. Some of the hotels are newly built; they dont look as stunning as this hotel is.
Also the location means that we are right in the heart of London, so when the hotel was built, London was kind of growing round the hotel and we are still much at the centre, so we have shopping on our doorsteps, we have parks at our doorsteps, if you want to go the theaters in the evenings, they are at our doorsteps.
So, we are really  in the centre and that comes from our history, you can’t  build a big hotel like this in a location like this any more , it is  never going to  happen again. So we have that advantage to us.
On tourist attractions close to the hotel:
The museums, British museum is very close by, some of the parks, regent park is close by here , we have the theaters, the shopping streets of London, we have Regent street, Bond street, oxford street, that is the main shopping area for shopping in London is right here in our door steps.
We have places like the  Buckingham palace which is ten minutes walk from here; the London Eye is very close; the tower bridge is close. So, we are really in the heart of London, everything is close by.
On the traditional afternoon tea:
Afternoon tea  is such a tradition , the experience here is very involved, so  it is a lovely relax atmosphere when you come in and from the room you can see that it is very calm and you can take your time , take two hours and just relax. People come here for celebrations like birthday, weddings and come here to have fun. I think the experience here is probably one of the best in London.
The experience you get here is different from any other hotel.  Peaceful lounge, it is luxurious and you can take your time to enjoy live music.
On the restaurant:
The Landau restaurant opened last year, we have father and son Albert and Michel Roux Jr as the chef, and they have incredible history in London. They are very famous, the junior is a TV personality, he has a lot of TV shows, he is very well known in this country. His father opened the first restaurant and handed down to the son, he went into semi retirement, but came back after twenty years to work with the son here.
It has  been a great success,  I think they  wanted  to come here because of the prestige of the hotel, the location, we have a beautiful dinning room, amazing kitchen set up  which is a great asset to have.
We have two main restaurants, the Landau and the Palm Court as well. We served afternoon tea at  Palm Court and also served break fast here as well as meal. The third option is our bar, which also serve bar food as well.
On the rooms
We have 380 rooms.  One of the unique thing about our rooms are that they are just refurbished, but because we have large number of rooms, we can do lot of different things, so we may take a large group of people coming into London, we have product like inter connecting rooms which are popular with families.
Traditional features
The concept behind the rooms’ interior is that we are traditional hotel and we have a great
